A combined facelift and neck lift rejuvenates the face and neck because the aging facial structures are all connected (the platysma muscle in the neck and SMAS in the face). By lifting the face we improve the jawline and jowls, and also the lateral neck, restoring youthful definition. (1) A platysmaplasty is the shaping and tightening of the neck muscle laxity; this is the step of the necklift that contributes to further reshaping of the central neck.
Genetics, sun damage, weight fluctuations, lifestyle choices, and environmental factors can all affect the quality of your skin and deeper structures of your face and neck. If you are concerned about jowls, loose skin, shape change, or excess fat on the face or neck, a combined lift can address these issues. Each procedure is tailored to your unique aesthetic goals.

About Facelifts
The face is one of the first regions to show visible signs of aging. As we age, the levels of collagen and elastin in the skin naturally decline, often leading to fine lines, wrinkles, and laxity that affect facial appearance. Facial muscles and fat can also shift with age, contributing to sagging and volume loss.
Dr. Miotto specializes in deep plane facelifts. With this technique, she adjusts the deep underlying connective tissues of the face, plus removes any excess skin creating sustainable, natural-looking results. (1) While some surgeons might overlook the importance of addressing the underlying facial structures, Dr. Miotto prioritizes the extended deep plane to improve facial shape without the “pulled look” and unnecessary tension on the skin, all to provide each of her patients with results that are subtle but impactful and long-lasting.
About Neck Lifts
A neck lift is the right procedure to remove droopy skin and excess tissue from the neck for a sharper, more youthful jawline and cervico mental angle. (2) Dr. Miotto uses a range of targeted techniques to create a more youthful neck:
- Platysmaplasty: Dr. Miotto can shape and tighten the platysma muscle (superficial neck muscle) by sewing the loose edges of the muscle together under the chin, restoring the transition between the jawline and neck. This can reduce the appearance of neck banding, double chin, and sagging in this area.
- Fat Removal: When the fat is located beneath the platysma muscles, Dr. Miotto performs shaping of the fat to reveal a youthful contour. She may perform fine liposuction when the fat is located above the platysma muscle. The surgical plan is determined during a consultation with Dr Miotto, and it is specific to every single patient.
- Excess Skin Removal: Dr. Miotto can remove excess skin from the neck to sharpen the jawline and reduce the appearance of skin sagging, achieving neck definition.
Benefits of a Face and Neck Lift
A facelift and neck lift are almost always done together because this combination of techniques cohesively provides facial aging. The face and neck do not age separately, since the laxity of the platysma muscle in the lower face affects the neck appearance, and vice versa. By lifting and repositioning the face and the neck together, the results look more “normal” without pulling in the skin excessively. (3) By combining a facelift and a neck lift, Dr. Miotto can also reduce the appearance of jowls and vertical muscle banding, both caused by excess laxity in the platysma muscle, which connects the lower face and the neck.

FAQ
How long is recovery after a facelift?
In many cases, patients can go back to work 2 weeks after their appointment, depending on the physical demands of their job. Patients should wait to return to more strenuous activities until their surgeon indicates that it is safe to do so. Recovery timelines may vary depending on the extent of the procedure and the patient’s experience. Your surgeon will provide you with a detailed timeline for your recovery period during your consultation at their office.
How long do the results of a facelift last?
Is there a best age to get a facelift?
Not necessarily; age is not the primary determining factor for facelift candidacy. What matters most is that the patient is in good health and able to undergo a surgical procedure safely, and that they have realistic expectations. Candidates should also show visible signs of facial aging before considering the procedure. Most facelift patients tend to be between the ages of 48 and 67. Your surgeon will determine your candidacy during your personal consultation. Your surgeon’s deep plane techniques allow for long-lasting, stable results that continue to appear natural over time. However, it is important to keep in mind that the facial tissues will continue to age. Most patients experience results that persist for about 5-10 years.
Can I combine a facelift with another procedure?
Yes, facelifts can be performed alongside other facial rejuvenation procedures. This can provide patients with more comprehensive results. Common procedures that are combined with a facelift include a lower and/or upper eyelid lift, fat transfer to the face, brow lift, or a lip lift. If you are interested in including any other procedures in your treatment plan, your surgeon can discuss your options with you during your personal consultation. Nonsurgical treatment options are available as well.
Will I have any visible scars showing after my facelift?
Scarring is almost always inevitable after any surgical procedure involving incisions. However, your experienced surgeon will place your incisions in discreet locations, such as around the ear, the scalp, and along the hairline. As you heal, it is likely that any visible scars will continue to fade and become less noticeable over time. Your surgeon will provide you with aftercare instructions that will ensure you experience minimal scarring post-procedure.
