About Upper Eyelid Lift
The skin on the upper eyelid is very thin and naturally loses elasticity over time. As it stretches and wrinkles, it can lead to a tired appearance. Upper blepharoplasty is a highly effective procedure for those looking to restore a more open, refreshed, and youthful look to their eyes. (1) If you have noticed sagging around the eyes and changes to the position of your eyelid crease as you age, we can help you. (2)
Types of Eyelid Lifts
There are several different types of eyelid lifts we can perform:
- Upper: We can address excess skin that is affecting your field of vision and reshape the eyelids for a smoother, more youthful-looking appearance.
- Lower: This procedure can address droopy, puffy lower eyelids as well as volume loss.
- Quad Blepharoplasty: We can address the upper and lower eyelids together to enhance your appearance.
Causes of Eyelid Ptosis
Although some individuals are born with droopy eyelids (congenital ptosis), others develop them later in life due to aging. Effectively treating a droopy eyelid begins with accurately identifying its underlying cause. With her extensive experience in plastic surgery, Dr. Miotto has the expertise to diagnose the specific factors contributing to eyelid drooping and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
Benefits
Undergoing an upper eyelid lift offers several benefits, which include:
- Youthful-looking appearance: With a sharper eyelid crease, volumized upper eyelid.
- Improvement in facial symmetry: Addressing asymmetrical eyelids can balance your facial features.
- Bright eyes: You can enjoy looking more awake and refreshed after surgery.
- Long-lasting results: Results last for several years, especially with skin care and sun protection.
- Minimal scarring: Dr. Miotto uses a meticulous technique to make incisions hidden along the natural curves of your eyelids to reduce the visibility of scarring.
Candidates
While most blepharoplasty patients are over 35, inherited traits can cause sagging eyelids at an earlier age, leading some people to pursue surgery before their mid-thirties.
Ideal blepharoplasty candidates are those who:
- Are in good general health
- Do not have any serious eye conditions
- Understand the limitations of this procedure
- Do not have a condition that could impair the body’s ability to heal
- Are nonsmokers
- Maintain good skin health
Consultation
During the initial consultation, Dr. Miotto and her team will ask about your medications, medical history, previous procedures, and current aesthetic goals. Patients are encouraged to bring a list of their medications with them on the day of their consultation. In addition, many patients find it helpful to create a list of questions and bring it to their appointment. Dr. Miotto will recommend the procedures that will provide the patient with the best results possible.

Preparation
Since alcohol can promote inflammation, patients should avoid alcoholic beverages for at least seven days before surgery. Dr. Miotto does not operate on smokers because nicotine slows the healing process and could result in the development of an infection, open wounds, or tissue necrosis. Smoking accelerates aging in many ways, so it is counterproductive to smoke if you are interested in aesthetic procedures.
All patients should arrange transportation home from their upper eyelid lift and take time away from work or other obligations to recover. Dr. Miotto will provide each patient with detailed preparation instructions, so please read through and follow yours closely.
Procedure
When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, upper eyelid surgery can be completed within an hour, depending on various factors. While the exact approach may vary based on individual needs, the procedure generally follows these key steps:
- First, anesthesia is administered. Once the patient is comfortable, Dr. Miotto can begin upper blepharoplasty.
- Dr. Miotto will make an incision along the natural crease of the upper eyelid to ensure the resulting scar remains well hidden.
- Dr. Miotto will remove the excess eyelid skin. Sometimes, the fatty tissue if excessive is conservatively trimmed, or just repositioned.
- After completing the surgery, Dr. Miotto will use very fine sutures to close the incisions. These sutures are visible, and they are removed in five to seven days.
After Your Surgery
After your upper eyelid lift, you will remain in the recovery room until you are fully awake. You will receive information to ensure that you are aware of how to properly care for the treated areas.
During your recovery, you will need to take the following steps to help your skin heal:
- Eye ointment may need to be applied in the eye as directed by Dr. Miotto or her staff.
- Wearing dark sunglasses can help protect the eyes from UV rays and reduce their exposure to bright light.
- Dr. Miotto or her staff will instruct the patient to use eyedrops to clean the eyelids.
After surgery, patients are required to have an adult assist them for at least 24 hours. This adult must be capable of serving as a caregiver (e.g., to help the patient walk, use the washroom, etc.). Dr. Miotto recommends that patients wait at least two weeks before attending social events to allow the area around the eyes to heal.
We will schedule a follow-up appointment with you to allow Dr. Miotto to monitor your progress and remove your sutures.
Results

After this procedure, the patient’s upper eyelid looks more defined, and the eye opens wider, which makes the patient appear more youthful, refreshed, and awake. You can enjoy long-lasting results if you take good care of your skin and avoid sun exposure that could result in accelerated aging. (3)

FAQ
How long do the results of an upper eyelid lift last?
Results can last for many years, although aging will continue to occur.
Will there be noticeable scars after an upper eyelid lift?
Scarring is an inevitable aspect of all surgeries. However, incisions are placed in the natural crease of the lid during an upper eyelid lift, often making scars inconspicuous after healing.
When can I return to normal activities after my upper eyelid lift?
Most patients are back to their daily routines within two weeks, although strenuous activities should be avoided until fully cleared by the surgeon.
Can I have an upper eyelid lift and lower eyelid lift at the same time?
Yes! This is also known as a quad blepharoplasty. A lower eyelid lift can effectively improve the appearance of the under-eye areas by reducing bulging or sagging. When combined with an upper eyelid lift, patients can experience more comprehensive periorbital rejuvenation.
